OPENING PRAYER

Blessed art Thou, O Christ our God, who has shown forth the fishermen as supremely wise by sending down upon them the Holy Spirit, and through them did draw the world into Thy net. O befriender of all, glory to Thee.

Once, when He descended and confounded the tongues, the Most High divided the nations (Tower of Babel, see Genesis 11: 1-9); and when He divided the tongues of fire (on Pentecost), He called all into unity; and (because of this) with one accord we glorify the All-holy Spirit. World without end. Amen.

OPENING HYMN        "Siyahamba - We Are Marching" (Traditional - As One Voice, Vol. 2, # 113)

REFLECTION

      The cosmos dreams in me

      While I wait in stillness,

      Ready to lean a little further

      into the heart of the Holy.

Poem Reflection: Joyce Rupp begins one of her poems with these four lines. It sets a tone for prayerfully walking daily as we celebrate Pentecost. Stillness instantly makes me think of silence. Perhaps what is best right now is for you to read these lines, and close your eyes for a while.

PAUSE

PSALM 85

(Recited by one person with responses -bold print - by the community)

You have been gracious to your land, O LORD;

you have restored the good fortune of Jacob.

You have forgiven the iniquity of your people

and blotted out all their sins.

You have withdrawn all your fury

and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation.

Restore us then, O God our Saviour;

let your anger depart from us.

You have withdrawn all your fury

and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation.

Restore us then, O God our Saviour;

let your anger depart from us.

Will you be displeased with us forever?

Will you prolong your anger from age to age?

Will you not give us life again,

that your people may rejoice in you?

Show us your mercy, O LORD,

and grant us your salvation.

I will listen to what the LORD God is saying,

for he is speaking peace to his faithful people

and to those who turn their hearts to him.

Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him,

that his glory may dwell in our land.

Mercy and truth have met together;

righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

Truth shall spring up from the earth,

and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

The LORD will indeed grant prosperity,

and our land will yield its increase.

Righteousness shall go before him,

and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

Glory to you ...

GOSPEL

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep." The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!"

INTENTIONS

In peace, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For the peace of the whole world, the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

For this community, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, have mercy.

PERSONAL INTENTIONS

Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. Amen

Let us pray:

Holy Spirit, whose mission it is to direct and guide our lives, draw down upon us the wind and fire of a Pentecost for our times.

Spirit of God, help us to see the signs of the times, and open our hearts so that Brothers, Sisters, and may all respond to the calls you make to us in the world of young people and, especially, of the poor. Help us to find the right guidelines to respond to these calls.

Spirit of love, renew our fidelity to the living charism of our Founder, teach us to find new vocations, and raise up new saints for the service of the young people of the new millennium now begun.

Strengthened by your support and bound together by ties of solidarity, may we use our talents and our resources in the service of a mission adapted to present-day conditions.

We ask you this through Jesus, our brother and Lord. Amen.

CLOSING BLESSING

The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, in Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of almighty God, Father, + Son, and Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen
