(as told by John McCutcheon)
A young Cherokee lad came home from school one afternoon with a face as
long as a summer day.
“Grandfather,” he said, as he collapsed on
the other end of the couch “what can I do about the bullies at school?
They tease me and poke fun at me and sometimes trip and push me down. It
makes me angry inside...and hurt.”
“Well, that will depend on who wins inside of you,” said his grandfather
quietly.
“What do you mean, Grandfather?” replied the boy, curious at the
direction his grandfather had turned their talk. “Inside of everyone,”
said his grandfather, “there are two wolves. The first is a fierce wolf,
strong and eager to fight. He always wants to attack and will return
hurt for hurt. The second is a docile wolf, quiet and thoughtful, who
will seek to find a way around the fighting and will return love for
hurt. Each will seek to claim your Spirit.”
“But who will win, Grandfather?” asked the
boy, a bit confused now.
“The one you feed, dear,” replied his grandfather, “the one you feed.”
