Setting: A lighted Paschal Candle and the Bible are the focus of the prayer space. Small candles for the participants are lighted during the opening hymn. Lighting within the room is soft and subdued, mainly from the candlelight. This is a quiet time for praying for peace for troubled areas of our world, without any political stance.
Opening Hymn 'Stay With Me' ~ Taizé Chant ( Songs & Prayers from Taizé - CD; or Taizé Chants:Jesus Remember Me - Margaret Rizza) Stay With Me Stay with me, remain here with me. Watch and pray, watch and pray!
Opening Prayer Muslim Prayer for Peace
In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful - Praise be to the Lord of the Universe who has created us and made us into tribes and nations that we may know each other, not that we may despise each other. If the enemy incline towards peace, do thou also incline towards peace, and trust God, for the Lord is the one that heareth and knowith all things. And the servants of God most gracious, are those who walk on the Earth in humility, and when we address them, we say "PEACE."
Reading 1 Psalm 85
You once favoured, LORD, your land, restored the good fortune of Jacob. You forgave the guilt of your people, pardoned all their sins. You withdrew all your wrath, turned back your burning anger. Restore us once more, God our saviour; abandon your wrath against us. Will you be angry with us forever, drag out your anger for all generations? Please give us life again, that your people may rejoice in you. Show us, LORD, your love; grant us your salvation. I will listen for the word of God; surely the LORD will proclaim peace to the people, to the faithful, to those who trust in God. Near indeed is salvation for the loyal; prosperity will fill our land. Love and truth will meet; justice and peace will kiss. Truth will spring from the earth; justice will look down from heaven.
QUIET PRAYER
Hymn 'O Lord Hear My Prayer' ~ Taizé Chant (Taizé Chants:Jesus Remember Me - Margaret Rizza - CD)
O Lord, Hear My Prayer O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. When I call, answer me. O Lord, hear my prayer. O Lord, hear my prayer. Come and listen to me.
Reading 2 Leviticus 19
The LORD said to Moses, 'When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not be so thorough that you reap the field to its very edge, nor shall you glean the stray ears of grain. Likewise, you shall not pick your vineyard bare, nor gather up the grapes that have fallen. These things you shall leave for the poor and the alien. I, the LORD, am your God. 'You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another. You shall not swear falsely by my name, thus profaning the name of your God. I am the LORD. 'You shall not defraud or rob your neighbour. You shall not withhold overnight the wages of your day labourer. You shall not curse the deaf, or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you shall fear your God. I am the LORD. 'You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment. Show neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but judge them justly. You shall not go about spreading slander among your kinspeople; nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbour's life is at stake. I am the LORD. 'You shall not bear hatred for your brother (or sister) in your heart. Though you may have to reprove them, do not incur sin because of them. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbour as yourself. I am the LORD.
QUIET PRAYER
Hymn 'Dona Nobis Pacem Domine' ~ Taizé Chant (Taizé Chants:Jesus Remember Me - Margaret Rizza - CD)
Dona Nobis Pacem Domine Dona nobis pacem Domine.
Concluding Prayer Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred ... let me sow love where there is injury ... pardon where there is doubt ... faith where there is despair ... hope where there is darkness ...light where there is sadness ... joy Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled ... as to console to be understood ... as to understand, to be loved ... as to love for it is in giving ... that we receive, it is in pardoning, that we are pardoned, it is in dying ... that we are born to eternal life.
Concluding Hymn 'My Peace' ~ Taizé Chant (Taizé Chants:Jesus Remember Me - Margaret Rizza - CD)
My peace I leave you, my peace I give you: trouble not your hearts. My peace I leave you, my peace I give you: be not afraid.
